In WCIRB pair notation the first code listed is the low-wage code and the second is the high-wage — and cheaper — code. Format: trade, low/high code, current threshold, threshold from September 1, 2026.

The finish-trade trap: a nine-dollar spread inside one crew
The thing that makes these six dangerous is not any individual threshold — it is how far apart they sit while the work happens on the same jobsite, often on the same day, sometimes by the same employee.
A drywall-and-plaster subcontractor is in wallboard at $45 and plastering at $42, and if it also paints, in painting at $36. The same employee at $40.00 an hour is low-wage on the drywall, low-wage on the stucco, and high-wage on the paint — three different code assignments for one person in one week, decided entirely by which task their hours are charged to. That is not an edge case; it is a normal week for a finish sub.
The same applies to mechanical. Sheet metal fabrication and ductwork both sit at $37.00, while HVAC equipment installation is in the plumbing pair at $35.00 and automatic sprinkler is at $36.00. Three thresholds inside one mechanical contractor.
The only defence is job costing that ties hours to the task, not to the employee's job title. Without it, the auditor makes the allocation — and payroll not shown to meet a threshold is assigned to the low-wage code by default.
Trade notes worth knowing
Masonry — 5027/5028, $35 → $37. The smallest increase in the table, tied with roofing. Masonry is also the trade most often confused with concrete work, which is a separate pair at $36.00. Block, brick, and stone are masonry; flatwork and slabs are not.
Plastering or stucco — 5484/5485, $38 → $42. A $4.00 move on a trade whose crews frequently sit in the high thirties, so a large share of typical stucco payroll crosses the line on this renewal. Stucco is heavy on California residential, which means a lot of accounts move at once.
Wallboard — 5446/5447, $41 → $45. Near the top of the table, close to carpentry and steel framing at $46.00. For many drywall subs the practical effect is that nobody clears the threshold at all, which at least produces a predictable answer — price the whole crew low-wage and stop pretending otherwise on the submission.
Glaziers — 5467/5470, $39 → $43. Commercial curtain-wall glazing and residential window replacement are the same classification but very different exposures; underwriters know the difference even where the code does not. Describe the work, not just the trade.
Sheet metal and ductwork — 5538/5542, $33 → $37. Two sub-classes at the same threshold, and the pair most often reported incorrectly to the plumbing codes. Ductwork is 5538(2)/5542(2); HVAC equipment is not.
Automatic sprinkler — 5185/5186, $33 → $36. Fire-protection piping is its own pair, not part of plumbing, and its threshold now sits a dollar under the plumbing figure. Contractors who do both need the split reported cleanly.
The mechanics are the same across all six
It is a cliff, not a slope — one cent below the threshold puts the entire payroll in the expensive code.
It applies employee by employee, never to a crew or company average.
"Regular hourly wage" is a defined term — overtime premium, bonuses and per diem generally do not count toward it.
Check the sub-classification, not just the trade name — it is the sub-class that appears on the policy.
Run the raise-versus-reclassify math per employee — the experience mod multiplies the reclassification cost but not the wage cost.
