The fitters who just became low-wage

A sprinkler fitter earning $34.00 an hour was a high-wage employee under the old $33.00 threshold and was reported in 5186. From September 1, 2026 the threshold is $36.00, so the same person at the same wage doing the same work is now reported in 5185. Nothing about the risk changed. The cost did.

At a 1.00 mod over 2,000 hours, that employee’s workers’ comp goes from about $1,607 to about $3,529 — an increase of $1,922, or 120%. At a 1.75 mod the same worker goes from roughly $2,812 to $6,176. On a crew of ten fitters in that wage band, at a 1.75 mod, that is about $33,600 of additional annual premium for no change in payroll.

Which code is which

5186 — high wage. Automatic sprinkler installation within buildings, including shop, yard or storage operations, for employees whose regular hourly wage equals or exceeds $36.00.
5185 — low wage. The same operations for employees below $36.00, and for any employee whose wage the employer cannot verify with time records.
What the class covers. Installation, service and repair of automatic fire-suppression sprinkler systems that disperse water or fire-suppressant powder, gas or liquid chemicals within commercial and residential buildings. Lawn and irrigation sprinklers are not this classification.

Rate history

5185 went from $4.180 (9/1/2024) to $4.640 (9/1/2025) to $5.190 (9/1/2026) — up 11.9% this cycle, in line with the 10.4% statewide advisory increase. 5186 went from $1.700 to $2.070 to $2.363, up 14.2%. Both codes are rising, and the threshold moved $3.00 at the same time, so a sprinkler contractor gets hit twice on the same renewal: a higher rate on every dollar, and more payroll landing in the expensive code.

When the raise pays for itself

Per 2,000-hour employee at a 1.00 mod, raising to $36.00 from:

$33.00 — raise costs $6,000 in wages, premium falls $1,724. Net cost $4,276.
$34.00 — raise costs $4,000, premium falls $1,828. Net cost $2,172.
$35.00 — raise costs $2,000, premium falls $1,932. Net cost $68 — effectively a wash.
$35.50 — raise costs $1,000, premium falls $1,984. Net saving $984.

Break-even is about $35.03 per hour at a 1.00 mod, before payroll taxes on the raise. Anyone at $35.00 or above should be moved to $36.00 before the policy incepts.

At a 1.75 mod a fitter at $35.99 costs $39.26 an hour all-in. At $36.00 they cost $37.49 — $3,540 per FTE per year for one cent of wage. Mod cleanup takes three years; reclassification takes one payroll run. If the mod itself is the problem, that is a separate placement question.

Two classification carve-outs for sprinkler contractors

Inspection and certification on a job basis goes to 8720(1), Inspection for Insurance, Safety or Valuation Purposes — a far cheaper code — provided the employer performs no service or repair work at the same job or location. Test-and-tag crews who also fix what they find stay in 5185/5186 for that job.
Plumbing and HVAC piping is not sprinkler work. Domestic water, gas, and heating or cooling pipe installed by the same shop is separately classified under 5183/5187, which has its own $35.00 threshold.

What else lands on the same renewal

September 1, 2026 is a crowded date: all sixteen dual-wage thresholds move, the advisory pure premium level rises 10.4%, and the experience rating eligibility threshold goes to $11,700. For sprinkler contractors the $3.00 threshold move and the 12–14% rate increase land together. Pull the 5185/5186 payroll split on the expiring term versus the quoted term, and a list of employees within a dollar of $36.00.

One honest caveat

These are WCIRB approved pure premium rates — advisory benchmarks, not the rates any carrier charges. California is an open-rating state; every insurer files its own rates and applies its own schedule and experience modifications. The shape of the 5185/5186 gap holds across the market because the loss data underneath is the same, but the exact break-even for a given account depends on the carrier’s filed rates and the client’s mod.
